What is infrared light and how is it used in the sauna?

About infrared heat waves and infrared light

Long-wave infrared rays produced in our saunas are part of a specific segment of the light's spectra.

Most of the sun's energy comes from the infrared frequency range. Infrared is a form of radiant heat that heats objects directly without heating surrounding air. Humans, animals and plants naturally absorb the heat from the infrared rays. Materials and liquids can also absorb infrared light / energy.

You have probably experienced the heat of the sand on the beach on a sunny summer day. The ability of infrared heating waves to heat up is clear. When we are in direct sunlight, we feel warm as our body absorbs the infrared rays. If a cloud passes by and shadows the sun, we immediately feel colder. This is not because the outdoor temperature drops without the cloud preventing the infrared rays from reaching us. It is the long-wave infrared light that is experienced as heat when staying in the sun.

Infrared rays are a form of light / energy which is invisible to the human eye. However, infrared must not be mixed with UV (ultraviolet) rays which can burn and damage the skin.

How is infrared heat waves generated in a sauna?

Visible light we all have experience of, under this group or "infra" to red light we find the infrared light. Infrared light is the second lowest energy band of light and is not visible to the naked eye.

The infrared segment of the electromagnetic spectrum is divided into 3 parts based on its wavelength. Near - medium - long - wave infrared rays.

Long-wave infrared rays

or FIR (far infrared) also known as radiation heat is a form of energy that heats objects directly. This through a process called conversion (transformation) Water molecules and organic matter readily absorb infrared heat energy because their resonant frequency consistently and vigorously follows the same wave frequency as infrared light. And in this way, both the radiator (the heating element) and the receiver become the frequency.

A long-wave infrared sauna

Infrared light is a natural phenomenon and is the part of the sun's invisible spectra that gives us humans, animals and nature, warmth here on our earth and is thus absolutely vital to the survival of the earth. Characteristic of an infrared sauna where the light used is that it penetrates deep into our organism and warms the body from the inside. An infrared sauna thus works in direct contrast to a traditional sauna. Infrared light penetrates deep into the body and its tissue and you feel it as soft and comfortable.

The long-wave infrared heat penetrates the organic matter in a deeper way than, for example, the air heating of a traditional sauna. Infrared heat therapy provides a very uniform warming effect inside the body instead of the outside. When organic matter is heated by near infrared rays (0.76-5 microns), the surface becomes warmer than the inside. The heating of the inside takes place by dissipating the heat from the surface.
Most of the energy the sun produces is within the infrared light spectrum. The atmosphere permits infrared rays between 7-14 microns and when the earth is heated, it radiates infrared rays between 7-14 microns with a peak of 10 microns. We are surrounded by many different wavelengths that spread around us, some frequencies pass through us while others are reflected in the path. For example, the spectra of visible light are, with their very short waves reflected away from us, while radio waves with a long wavelength only pass through our bodies. Some wavelengths are absorbed by a material and heat it up. For our bodies and other living organic materials, they are the long-wave infrared rays that are the heat-generating waves. We live in an environment full of long-wave infrared rays, our bodies receive them and simultaneously emit them. A human hand radiates infrared energy between 8-14 microns. This is also the basis of the 3000-year-old Chinese hand-laying tradition where the healing effects of these natural infrared rays have been used.

Human consists of 70% water.

The fact that human consists of 70% of water is of great importance for the many positive effects of the long-wave infrared rays on the body. The resonance frequency of the water molecule is 9.4 microns and the long-wave infrared rays span 7-14 microns. In order to more easily try to illustrate what this means, you can think of a metal bowl with water, moisten the hand rub the edge of the bowl with an open hand, a dull tone will be heard and you can see how the water is rippled on the surface to rise so that is resonance. Resonance occurs when the water in the bowl happens to have the same resonant frequency (self-frequency) as the frequency of an external applied force. In this case, the tone from the hand on the edge of the bowl.
